According to the latest data on car sales in Spain, the passenger car market has not fully recovered, however, the figures for the electricity sector continue to rise. We analyze it.
The latest car sales data in Spain (corresponding to the month of March 2022 ) are worrying. The 59,920 cars and SUVs registered in that month, according to data from ANFAC (Spanish Association of Car and Truck Manufacturers) represent a drop of 30.2 percent compared to the same month last year. In the accumulated figure for the year, this decline in sales of passenger cars and SUVs is also observed. In the first quarter of 2022, 164,399 units were registered, while in the same period of 2021 there were 186,055 units, which represents a negative difference of 11.6 percent.
With this drop in sales, the new passenger car market has still not recovered. If we make a comparison with the month of March 2019 (the year before the pandemic), the collapse is even more catastrophic, reaching up to 51 percent . And the same can be said if the first quarter of this 2022 is compared with that of that year, since in that case the regression is 48 percent.
Reasons for the decline in car sales in Spain
According to experts, the sector has been increasingly weighed down by the concurrence of very different factors, among which they cite the following: the pandemic, the transport strike, the shortage of microchips, energy prices, the conflict in Ukraine etc,
The sum of all these factors does not benefit demand, which prefers to wait for the situation to clear up before buying a new car.
The forecasts are that we will have to wait at least another year for the market to recover.
Top 10 selling vehicles
In the following table you can see which are the ten best-selling vehicles in the last month in which the data has been recorded (March):
|3||Volkswagen T ROC||1,578|
This other table shows the ten best-selling cars during the first quarter of the year:
|4||Volkswagen T Roc||4,001|
As can be seen from both tables, the best-selling model , both in the month of March and throughout the first quarter of the year, is the Hyundai Tucson Korean SUV , which shows an increase over the previous year of 5 and 10 percent, respectively. Undoubtedly, a formidable result for a model that, since the launch of its latest generation, has dominated the segment.
Electric car sales on the rise
Despite the general market decline, electric vehicle registrations continue to rise. The market share of the electric vehicle already exceeds 4 percent thanks, in large part, to the increase in supply.
The best-selling electric car is the Tesla Model 3, which remains the first choice among Spanish drivers, despite the arrival of new models. It is a sales success both in Spain and globally.
The 5 best-selling electric cars in the first quarter of 2022 are the following:
|one||Tesla Model 3||1,133|
|two||KIA e Niro||773|
|5||Hyundai IONIQ 5||296|
According to experts, it is a good time to buy an electric car both because of its zero emissions and because of the many restrictions that are being placed on diesel and gasoline cars.
